VPS Guide for Metatrader Expert Advisor

January 19, 2008

If found that Ck write really good guidance about VPS for Metatrader Expert Advisor.

VPS Introduction

This guide aims to help you configure a Windows Virtual Private Server(from now on refered to as a VPS) for the purpose of running a MT4 trading platform. Where possible, I’ll try not to use too much technical jargon to explain how things are done. But being a technical document, it will be hard not to be a bit technical at times.

For the techies, this document will be easy to follow. For those who are not as technically inclined, I suggest that you get assistance from a friend who is more comfortable with the contents within this document.

As this document is distributed to many people, I will not be able to provide any technical support with regards to setting up your VPS. However, you can visit the following link to post your questions, and hopefully one of the many kind souls out there will be able to help you. Who knows… the queries that you have may have already been asked and answered.

I will also be checking in regularly to see how I can help out. I believe this form of ’support’ will work out better in the long run since everyone will be able to see the Qs and As to help themselves as much as they can. I’ll also post new versions of this guide there for download when it becomes available.

For all your Q’s and A’s, please visit : ckowyong

In this guide, you’ll learn how to :

purchase a suitable Windows VPS for running MT4.

set up a shortcut to access your VPS in console mode.

configure your VPS to automatically log in using the administrator’s account after a restart.

configure your MT4 software to start automatically when Windows starts up.

configure your VPS to reboot on a fixed schedule to keep it running healthy.

FractalWizard EA Setting

January 18, 2008

“I want 20% equity grow on my account every month, can FractalWizard EA achieve that?”

Please read this page carefully before you run FractalWizard on Live account!
IMPORTANT!
1. You must delete every variable in Global Variables at your MT4 platform before you start FractalWizard EA.To delete the Global Variables:

  • On the Tools menu, click Global Variables (or Press F3 button).
  • Press Delete button to delete the Global Variable.
  • Continue until all Global Variable has been deleted.

After the FractalWizard EA starts, DO NOT change anything inside the Global Variables.

FractalWizard EA needs those variables to continue trading if somehow your MT4 platform closed.

If you need to start the EA from the beginning (or new account), you need to delete all Global Variables again…THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

2. Fractal Wizard version 2.0 works on EURUSD pair, using H4 period.
3. You need to run the FractalWizard EA continuously in order the EA to work successfully, so you need a good PC and internet connection that can run 24 hours/day. There is a lot of VPS hosting or dedicated server that you can rent it below $50/month.
4. I do not recommend to use FractalWizard EA with other EA on the same account. FractalWizard EA from time to time needs to calculate the account drawdown and equity balance to close positions.
Minimum account size for FractalWizard EA:
  • Standard Account: USD 1,000.
    Bigger account size produce better results (because of the compounding effect).
  • Mini Account: USD 500.
    I find anomalies at fractals pattern on Mini account, I recommend using Standard Account.
At FractalWizard there are 3 important parameters:
  • Risk_Setting (1 to 20)
  • Aggressive_Trading (TRUE/FALSE)
  • Multiply (0.1 to 0.5) - this parameter work if you set Aggressive_Trading = TRUE.
How much maximum Risk Setting can I set to my account?

The answer is 20.

But please take a look at this back testing result below (2004/09/01 - 2007/12/12) ~ 3.5 years,

(Risk Setting = 10; Aggressive set to FALSE):
With Risk_Setting=10, resultedROI (Return On Inevstment): 280,831 (1100%) for 3.5 years back testing, drawdown up to 23.04%.
   I suggest 10 is the maximum Risk_Setting you set on your Live account.
For those who do not have stomach to sustain 25-30% drawdown on your account, I suggest you set smaller Risk_Setting.
This is back testing result using Risk Setting = 5; Aggressive set to FALSE.
With Risk_Setting=5, resulted ROI: 60,473 (241%), the drawdown down to 18.7% (below 20%), which I think most of people can sustain those level.
How aggressive can you go?
Before I explain about the Aggressive setting, please take a look the chart below:
(Risk Setting=10, Aggressive set to FALSE)
There is 2 period which FractalWizard needs 4 months (2006/02/25 -05/24) and 5.5 months (2006/06/23
-12/08) to recover the drawdown and gain new equity watermark.
Now with Aggressive setting set to TRUE and Multiply set to 0.3, the result:
Now the drawdown period takes around 3 months (2006/02/01-05/17), before achieving new equity watermark.
ROI = 549,606 (2198%) , Drawdown level up to 23.92%.
Click here for complete back testing result for Risk_Setting=10, Aggressive=TRUE and Multiply=0.3.
I change the Multiply to 0.5, now the drawdown period takes around 2 months, ROI = 601,234 (2404%) with drawdown level=25.24%. Fantastic huh!
What is Multiply does ?
The multiply setting work like this:
For every 10% drawdown in your account, the EA will increase the lot size at your trading account.
The calculation is:
Lot Size = Lot Size * (1 + n * Multiply)
n = 1 if your drawdown = 10%
n = 3 if your drawdown = 20%
n = 5 if your drawdown = 30%
n = 7 if your drawdown = 40%
Why you increase Lot Size when there is drawdown ?
For every good EA, there always good market condition and there is bad market condition.
This condition apply to FractalWizard EA too, no matter how good the market condition for the EA today, someday there will be bad market come.
With FractalWizard EA, the aggressive trading assume that after BAD condition market, there always GOOD market condition waiting. The aggressive trading assume after 10% or 20% drawdown; it’s time to increase the lot size in order to speed up the process to recover the drawdown.
For those who like Aggressive Trading (I prefer 0.2 level):
I suggest the maximum Multiply is 0.3, and use it carefully if you do not want to blow up your account.
For those who prefer conservative trading; or those who do not like principle adding bigger lot size in drawdown period, I suggest the Aggressive setting set to FALSE (OFF).

FractalWizard New Release

January 15, 2008

New release for FractalWizard (Release: Jan 15, 2008) :

I have asked several times to add parameter that enable you to close open positions when there are profit, sometimes FractalWizard already in profit positions but the target too far and you think the price can’t reach the target price.

  1. There are 2 additional parameters:
    - Custom_ProfitTarget (default=10,000~in dollar amount not in pips).
    - Always_ActivateCustomTarget (default=false).
  2. You can use this release to many demo account (not just one).
    My suggestion: test it on your broker demo account and InterbankFX demo account (My forward test using InterbankFX).
  3. No need to connect to my server. I receive email that the EA generate:”Your account has not been activated or expired!”. This is because bad internet connection, or your internet connection lost. The new release do not need to connect to my server.

Additional parameters:

  • Custom_ProfitTarget: You can use this parameter to set your own target (in dollar amount, not in pips).
    FractalWizard can open more than 1 positions. When you setup this parameter (example $100), the EA will close all positions at $100 profit or more.
    Suggestion how to set the target:
    Set Custom_ ProfitTarget around $1000 when the EA open 1 standard lot/positions. So when the EA open around 0.1 lot / positions, the suggested user_ target around $100, so on.
    You can set the target smaller if you think there will be reversal or there are support or resistance near current price.
  • Always_ActivateCustomTarget: use this target if you want the EA always close when the floating profit reach your custom target.
    When you set the parameter to False, the EA still use your target in Cusom_ProfitTarget parameter, but with additional requirement:- The Custom_ProfitTarget only activate if your current equity above last equity watermark. It means your current equity in positive balance (not in drawdown).- Example:
    You setup User_Target = $1,000 and Always_Activate_User_Target = False. You lost $2,000 before, so when the floating profit reach $1,000 the Custom_ProfitTarget will not activated. But when when your last lost $900 and the floating profit reach $1,000 the Custome_ProfitTarget will activated.
    I suggest you leave this parameters to False. My test show activate the User_CustomTarget only when you are in positive equity balance better than always activate in any conditions (including in drawdown). Unless you really sure the profit can not continue.

    The reason: when you always activate the User_CustomTarget in any conditions. Usually you get several small profit, but not enough to cover your losses (like scalping method).

Installation:

You just need to replace FractalWizard (new  release) and restart your MT4. And this version don’t need to use the DLL file.
